A big thank you again to everyone that came out on Saturday for the return of Mighty Fresh Saturdays. Considering people had lots of options that day being as it was Cinco De Mayo and the Mayweather fight night. We raised a good amount of money with the raffle for Barrio Station, had pinata games for the kids, djs, free tacos, a 70% off sale tent, face painting, skratch booth, etc etc etc. Basically the event had a lot of stuff going on and a great amount of people showed up! Words can’t explain enough, so check out these photos.

Barrio Station

Yesterday I had the pleasure and honor of meeting the head of Barrio Station in Barrio Logan which is the after school program that will benefit from our raffle tomorrow. I came to realize that they are so much more than an after school program but a strong establishment that does so much good for their community in many other aspects.

Rachel Ortiz has been there for nearly 50 years since the day they opened their doors. She has diligently been working with the same devotion, dedication, passion and all of that since day one. Having been under the wings of Cesar Chavez and part of many social movements from Bay Area to San Diego, she has significantly made a positive impact on Earth for the greater good of all mankind. Seriously.Her work, persona and devotion is inspirational and enlightening. I was nearly speechless leaving her office. I have no doubt that her work will continue to have positive impacts for decades and centuries to come. Barrio Station does so much for their community and people, I wish to someday be able to reach 10% of that kind of work for my people and communities. A rewarding accomplishment that would be. From creating affordable housing, programs to help and educate underprivileged youth, a million other things and simply being this beacon of light and hope for struggling communities. Please come by tomorrow and buy a zillion tickets in an effort to win great prizes and of course benefit Barrio Station.

RIP MCA

What is there to really be said about MCA and Beastie Boys that has not been said already in the 30 or so odd years since their inception. And really the inception that most of us all know which is that of MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D. A pioneering group, not in the general sense of hip hip, but of music. How they took that leap and introduced so many people to a new sound. Of course I was mad young at that time, not old enough to understand the implications. But that is not to say Beastie Boys didn’t help in putting me and a lot of us hip hop heads where we are at today. My brother introduced me to hip hop and Beastie Boys was one of his first inspirations. I remember when I was 13 or 14, maybe 15-my brother had Licensed to Ill on wax and was so insistent on me not fucking up that record. Sure enough my young ass lost it or fucked it up. One or the other (can’t remember)…anyway he was so0000 pissed and I do remember that. MCA rest in power.

MCA was a creative pioneer, social activist, and talented human being.

Side note* The way they performed with Mike Master Mike is how all aspiring hip hop groups, MCs, etc should perform with their djs. Truly incorporating your dj in your music and shows they way they did….man, we all wish we could rock like that.
